VŠE students celebrated the Swedish holiday of midsommar

Students and alumni of Swedish language courses at the Prague University of Economics and Business once again joined the traditional Midsommar celebration organized by the Nordic Society. The event offered an authentic experience of one of Scandinavia’s most cherished traditions while bringing together students, diplomats, translators, musicians, and enthusiasts of Nordic culture.

This year’s celebration took place on 23 June in the garden of Jana Satrapa Holá, Chair of the Nordic Society, who opened the programme with a talk on the history and traditions of midsommar celebrations in Sweden.

Midsommar is one of the most important traditional festivals in Scandinavia, especially in Sweden and Finland. It is associated with dancing around the maypole, singing, decorating with wildflowers, and enjoying seasonal food. Guests enjoyed classic Swedish dishes, including new potatoes with chives and pickled herring, strawberries with whipped cream, and the traditional strawberry cake.

Alongside members of the Nordic Society, the event welcomed diplomats, translators, musicians, and current as well as former VŠE students who study or have studied Swedish. Participants sang Swedish songs, danced to live music, and celebrated the long summer day in the spirit of Swedish tradition.
