New Courses Help International Students Discover the Czech Language and Culture
The Department of Slavic Languages presents three selected courses opening in the 2026/2027 academic year, designed for international students with varying levels of Czech proficiency. Whether you are just starting to learn Czech, already speak another Slavic language, or want to deepen your understanding of Czech society and culture, the new courses offer an opportunity to build practical language skills and gain valuable cultural insight.
Czech Life and Culture for Foreigners
The new course Czech Life and Culture for Foreigners is intended for international students with at least a B1 level of Czech who would like to expand their knowledge beyond language itself.
Studying a foreign language does not end with grammar. For successful studies, work, and everyday life in the Czech Republic, it is also important to understand local customs, history, traditions, and the cultural context. This is exactly what the new course focuses on. It will help students better navigate both the Czech academic and working environments.
Students will become familiar with Czech history and prominent figures in literature, film, music, and the fine arts. They will learn about Czech traditions and holidays, and discuss topics related to Czech society. They will also take a closer look at the life and work of Karel Čapek, Václav Havel, Miloš Forman, and Bedřich Smetana. The course will include interactive seminars, work with authentic materials, film screenings, student presentations, and cultural excursions in Prague.
The course also encourages intercultural dialogue by giving students the opportunity to compare Czech traditions with those of their own countries.

Czech for Slavic Speakers
Students from Slavic-speaking countries can enrol in Czech for Slavic Speakers (B1), a course designed for learners who already have an A2 level of Czech.
The course builds on similarities among Slavic languages, allowing students to progress more efficiently while focusing on areas that are typically challenging for Slavic learners. Classes emphasise active communication, work with authentic texts and practical language use.

Basic Czech for Foreigners
Students with no previous knowledge of Czech can join Basic Czech for Foreigners (A1).
Taught in English, the course introduces the fundamentals of the Czech language and prepares students for everyday communication during their studies and daily life in the Czech Republic. It provides a solid foundation for anyone planning to continue learning Czech in the future.
