How to Leverage the Defence Industry to Grow Your Business? Opportunities and Challenges According to Kristýna Helm
“The defence industry offers a wide range of opportunities for companies from the civilian sector,” was a key message at the From Automotive to Defence conference. However, as Kristýna Helm, Vice President of the Defence and Security Industry Association of the Czech Republic, points out, entering this sector requires a fundamental shift in approach.
The discussion highlighted that the defence sector operates differently from the automotive industry. Companies must be prepared for lower production volumes, longer contract cycles, and greater project complexity. At the same time, it is not a quick fix for downturns in the civilian sector, but rather a long-term strategic opportunity.
Why consider entering the defence industry?
- A growing and strategically important sector in Europe
- Opportunities to integrate into international supply chains
- The potential for stable and profitable business in the long term
An exclusive Executive Academy course connecting theory with practice
For these reasons, Kristýna Helm, in cooperation with the Executive Academy at the Faculty of International Relations, Prague University of Economics and Business, has developed a unique course titled Understanding Defence – A Business Perspective, taking place from 12 October to 27 November 2026.
The course is designed to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the specifics of the defence business, including marketing, sales, market analysis, and support for research and development of both military and dual-use technologies. Participants will also explore current challenges and future trends in defence technologies.
A strong emphasis is placed on practical application. Participants will learn:
- How defence public procurement works
- How to navigate procurement processes
- How to build strategic partnerships with governments, armed forces, and major defence companies
Graduates of the course will be able to develop strategies for business development, sales, and marketing in the field of defence and dual-use technologies, as well as better identify and capitalize on opportunities within this specific sector.
