Zdeněk Rod Publishes New Monograph with Routledge

Dr. Zdeněk Rod from Department of International and Diplomatic Studies has published a new scholarly monograph, Examining the Provincial Reconstruction Teams in Afghanistan: Navigating the Security–Development Nexus. The book has been released by the prestigious British academic publisher Routledge as part of its Contemporary Security Studies series.

The monograph examines the role of Provincial Reconstruction Teams (PRTs) in Afghanistan between 2002 and 2015. These teams sought to stabilise Afghan provinces by combining security operations with reconstruction and development activities.

Drawing on extensive academic and policy literature as well as interviews with practitioners and representatives of NATO member states, the book demonstrates that each country approached the link between security and development differently, reflecting its own priorities and producing markedly different outcomes. It also explains why development strategies often struggled in conflict environments and why military structures frequently found it difficult to support civilian objectives.

The publication introduces a new analytical framework for studying civil–military missions based on the concept of the security–development nexus. Its findings remain relevant for understanding contemporary peacebuilding, crisis management, and post-conflict reconstruction.

The book will be of interest to students, researchers, and practitioners in security studies, international relations, conflict resolution, and development studies.
