Lecturers from FIR lectured at the regional rounds of the Economic Olympiad
In the week from 23 to 27 January 2023, three regional rounds of the Economic Olympiad, a prestigious competition for secondary school students, were held in the Pilsen, Ústí nad Labem and Liberec regions, where teachers from the Faculty of International Relations of Prague University of Economics and Business presented their expert contributions.
In Pilsen, a cryptocurrency expert, a representative of the Department of International Economic Relations, Mgr. Ing. Jakub Jedlinský Ph.D. The topic entitled “Integrity and paranoia, the story of the crypt from the inside” was conceived in a narrative way and explained in relation to his personal story and approach to cryptocurrencies. The lecture was met with great interest from the students and was joined by several guests outside of the Olympiad participants, given how the topic of cryptocurrencies has resonated across the public in recent years. In Ústí nad Labem, the students were given an insight into the topic of sustainability in companies by the Vice-Dean of FIR Mgr. Ing. Daniel Houska Ph.D. in his presentation entitled “Sustainability in companies: pragmatic choice or “just” altruism?”. He focused on explaining the meaning of ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance), which is a phenomenon of our time and the reasons to deal with this topic. In discussion with the students, he clarified whether the topic only needs to be addressed if they care about the environment or if the interest in ESG has a broader context. An extremely interesting discussion also covered the accounting perspective – what are the principles of green accounting and the financial perspective – what is the view from the banking institutions. Liberec with its lecture by Ing. Kareem Isaam Abdallah, who shared with students the basic principles of economic relations in a lecture entitled “The contemporary world through the lens of economics”. He introduced economics as a discipline that is not just about numbers, but more importantly about understanding how the world works – how decisions made by individuals, businesses and governments affect our daily lives. He explained to the students that by looking at the world through the lens of economics, we can gain a deeper understanding of the current state of the economy and how it can be changed in the future. In his interaction with the students, he focused mainly on the form and principles of contemporary macroeconomic modelling, the theoretical development of economic thinking, its causes and consequences, government intervention in the economy, international economics and, last but not least, financial markets.Pilsen region: Mgr. All of the above-mentioned teachers very much welcomed the opportunity to meet the gifted students who are actively participating in the Economics Olympiad. At the Faculty of International Relations, those advancing from these regional rounds of the high school Economic Olympiad automatically qualify for admission to the International Business and Tourism undergraduate programs (regardless of whether they take the final exam this year or next year).
