Associate Professor Jana Vlčková published an article in the prestigious international peer-reviewed journal Competition and Change. This journal focuses on research into the causes and consequences of competition and change in the context of globalisation, financialisation and changes in economic relations.
The study examines how state activism has affected the internationalization of Czech and Hungarian multinationals after the global financial crisis. It focuses on four key channels: state ownership, the business and regulatory environment, industrial policies, and ‘quiet politics’.
In Hungary, there is a significant increase in state activism, while stagnation persists in the Czech Republic. Industrial policies and silent policies are gradually gaining prominence in Hungary, leading to changes among Hungarian multinationals.
The paper introduces the concept of “defensive internationalization”, where companies respond to an unstable environment by moving their headquarters abroad. The growing influence of industrial policies and European programmes may strengthen the role of the state, but it brings risks of corruption and misuse of public funds. The study can be found here.
She has been a member of the Department of International Economic Relations since 2012. In 2019 she was appointed Associate Professor in International Economic Relations. In 2014, she defended her dissertation on Global Changes in the Distribution of Technology and Innovation with a focus on the EU. In the Department, she teaches Geography of the World Economy, Economic Geography of East and Southeast Asia and Internal Market and New Trends in the EU economy and is the head of the new master’s professional program Green Transition and European Competitiveness.
