What is the organizational structure of VŠE?

The Prague University Economics and Business is divided into six faculties. They are numbered, and so sometimes, instead of their official name, the number is used:

1. Faculty of Finance and Accounting (the so-called “first faculty”, Czech abbreviation FFU, located on the 1st and 2nd floor of the New Building on Žižkov Campus)
2. Faculty of International Relations (“second Faculty”, Czech abbreviation FMV, English abbreviation FIR, located on the 2nd and 3rd floor of the New Building)
3. Faculty of Business Administration (“third faculty”, Czech abbreviation FPH, situated on the 3rd to 5th floors of the Rajská Building)
4. Faculty of Informatics and Statistics (“fourth Faculty”, Czech abbreviation FIS, situated on the 3rd and 4th floor of the New Building)
5. Faculty of Economics (“fifth faculty”, Czech abbreviation NF, located on the 3rd floor of the New Building)
6. Faculty of Management (“sixth faculty”, Czech abbreviation FMN, based in Jindřichův Hradec)

Who runs the Faculty of International Relations (FIR)?

The Dean runs the Faculty.

Doc. Ing. Martina Jiránková, Ph.D. has been the Dean of the Faculty of International Relations since 2024. She was elected to the post by the FIR Academic Senate on 23rd November 2023. Her term runs until January 31st 2028.

The Dean appoints his Vice-Deans for various areas and the faculty’s secretary. There are four Vice-Deans in total.

Affiliation of Courses to the Departments

Affiliation of a course can be identified by the beginning of a course ident:

Which issues can be solved directly at the Departments?

The Departments:

• issue deadlines for state final examinations and theses defense;
• accept theses;
• inform about their courses and visiting professors.

You can also leave your mail for teachers with a department secretary and obtain information from them on terms and other matters.

Other Faculty Bodies

Academic Senate

The Academic Senate of the Faculty is a self-governing representative body. Its members are elected by the Faculty academic community (not only teachers but also students). It approves various issues, such as the faculty budget or internal rules of the faculty; it controls faculty money management; it also elects the dean and can potentially dismiss him.

Disciplinary Committee

The Disciplinary Committee conducts disciplinary proceedings with students who have committed a disciplinary offence (violation of obligations stipulated by law or by VŠE and FIR internal regulations).

A common example of such behaviour is the non-payment of fees associated with studying or cheating during exams.

In the most serious cases, the punishment can be imposed in the form of exclusion from studies.

 Scholarship Commission

The Scholarship Commission decides about scholarships under the Scholarship Regulations of the University of Economics.

Grant of scholarships is based on an average grade and is described in the Scholarship Decree for the respective academic year.

Exceptional scholarships are also awarded – for example, for representing the faculty or for social reasons. They are decided each semester separately. The chair is the Vice-Dean for Studies.

There is also an accommodation scholarship available at the University of Economics. However, it is not managed by the faculties separately, but, rather, on the central university level.

 Study Coordinator

You will be in contact with your Study Coordinator regularly. She is the first and most competent person to advise on studying issues, to handle all confirmations and applications, or to verify the fulfilment of your study duties.

Academic titles

Academic titles can be gained based on studies and creative scientific work.

Examples from the Czech academic community:

• Engineer (abbreviated Ing. in front of the name; English equivalent is Master of Science – MSc);
• Magister (abbreviated Mgr. in front of the name; English equivalent is Master of Arts – MA);
• Doctor (abbreviated as Ph.D. after the name);
• Doctor (abbreviated PhDr., RNDr. and others before the name, these titles are not granted by VŠE)
• Candidate for Science (abbreviation CSc. after the name, not granted any more);
• Doctor of Science (DrSc. after the name, not granted any more).

Scientific-pedagogical titles

Scientific-pedagogical titles are acquired by internal teachers and are tied to their work at university. In order of importance, we recognize (from lowest rank to highest):

• Assistant (teacher in the first years of his practice);
• Associate professor (abbreviated Doc. before the name);
• Professor (abbreviation Prof. before the name).

Jobs at the university

Sometimes it is more appropriate to address teachers according to their job positions – “Vice-Dean”, “Dean”, “Vice-Rector”, “Rector,” etc. This depends on the situation in which you speak with the teacher.
