Course of Studies
Standard studies duration and conditions for its extension
How long can I study at the FIR?
The duration of studies is limited centrally by the Prague University of Economics and Business Study and Examination Rules. The study must be completed within one year from the end of the semester, in which the conditions for taking the final state exam in a major field were fulfilled, i.e. after receiving the last required credit (apart from the state exams and the thesis defence credits).
The Dean (doc. Ing. Martina Jiránková, Ph.D.) can extend this period. The extension should be requested in time, for each semester, by electronic application via InSIS. The application must be submitted before the beginning of the following semester, otherwise the student will become a candidate for termination.
WARNING: Each extension is thoroughly considered. It is not automatic.
For more information, see the section, Study Termination, below on this page.
What is the standard duration of a programme?
The standard duration of a bachelor’s degree study programme is 3 years.
The standard duration of a master’s degree study programme is 2 years.
Interruption of studies
For what reasons is it possible to interrupt studies?
On the student’s own request, he/she can interrupt the studies in particular:
- for health reasons (medically documented by a doctor)
- due to a long-term stay abroad (not financed by VŠE)
- for personal reasons (financial situation, family situation)
- due to parenthood
When and for how long can I interrupt my studies?
The unit of interruption is one semester, i.e. the interruption always ends on the end of the semester. Interruption due to parenthood can be terminated earlier, i.e. before the semester ends.
For health reasons, the study can be interrupted at any time in the semester.
By own request, the study can be interrupted for a maximum period equal to the standard period of study, i.e. six semesters for bachelor studies and four semesters for master’s degree programmes.
You can interrupt for more semesters at a time.
How can I request for study interruption?
An interruption request is submitted electronically via InSIS. It is necessary to state the period for which you plan to interrupt.
Throughout a semester, it is possible to interrupt your studies only due to medical issues. Interruption requests are usually accepted no later than in the third week of a semester.
Medical reports are always required in English, Czech or Slovak language. Otherwise, they have to be translated by an authorised person.
After the approval of the electronic request by the Vice-Dean for Studies, the Study Coordinator sends a decision by post. The Study Coordinator submits the interrupted period into InSIS and extends the study completion deadline.
ATTENTION: During the interruption, the person is not a student, therefore the Student visa also expires!
Interruption of studies due to parenthood
For interruption of studies due to parenthood, it is necessary to document:
- a medical certificate of lasting pregnancy
- a child’s birth certificate
- proof of maternity/parental leave
Before a child is born, it is enough to submit a medical report proving pregnancy. Based on that, the study can be interrupted for a maximum of one year. To extend this period, it is required to provide the child’s birth certificate and proof of the duration of parental leave. In case of any questions, please ask your Study Coordinator.
Due to parenting, your studies can be interrupted until the third birthday of the child. Further interruption is only possible according to the common rules for interrupting studies.
Visa validity during a study interruption
The interruption of studies is usually completed at the beginning of the semester (before the maximum study period expires). When the study is interrupted, the individual’s status as a student is not recognised, and cannot stay in the Czech Republic if their VISA is granted for study purposes.
Termination of studies
When do I stop being a student?
Proper studies completion takes place on the day of completion of the last part of the final state examination.
Students who do not have enough credit vouchers to complete their studies will be excluded from studies at the beginning of the following semester (more information available in the section ECTS Credit System above).
The termination of studies also happens when a student fails to pass a final state examination at the second repetition. It is not possible to take another term.
Until when after all my previous duties do I have to take the state exam?
All study duties must be completed within one year after the end of the semester when the student has fulfilled the conditions for the final state examination in the field, i.e. he has completed all prescribed subjects.
An extension of this deadline must be requested electronically via InSIS. A student can appeal against a decision to terminate their studies to the Rector during a 30-day period.
What are the conditions for obtaining a Diploma with Honours?
Students with a Diploma with Honours are awarded with an extra scholarship, which is not needed to be specifically requested.
The conditions for obtaining the Diploma with Honours:
- the student has achieved a grade point average of up to 1.5
- each part of the final state examination was graded “excellent”
- he/she properly completed the study at the standard time (study abroad not included)
