FIR and Paris 2024 Olympics

During the Summer Olympic Games 2024 in Paris, the Czech Republic was represented by many talented athletes, including two current FIR students – Gabriela Satková and Martin Straka.

Gabriela Satková is the Czech canoe slalom talent. This 22-year-old athlete earned her participation in the Olympic Games thanks to her silver medal at the 2024 European Championships. At the Olympics, she placed at the beautiful 7th place in the Women’s Slalom.

“I have felt tremendous support from the entire school and individual teachers over the years. It is always possible to agree with them and fulfil my study obligations despite the busy training schedule, which I appreciate. I appreciate our school’s attitude towards athletes. I think that this is not a given and that this approach is certainly not seen in all universities.”

The second representative is 23-year-old marathon swimmer Martin Straka. He earned his place in the Olympic Games in Paris in February 2024 thanks to his 17th place in the 10 km race at the World Championships in Doha. He also finished 13th at the World Championships in Fukuoka last year. At the Olympics, he finished with the time 1:57:52 at the beautiful 20th place.

“Thanks to the UNIS program that Centre for Physical Education and Sport placed me in, I was able to participate in many international competitions, where I gained key experiences that were decisive in qualifying for the Olympic Games. Special thanks to the IBB program coordinator Mgr. Petra Pražanová. And I must not forget Associate Professor Zuzana Křečková-Kroupová, who was very helpful in supervising my bachelor thesis.”

The participation of these top athletes in the Olympic Games is not only a major achievement for them, but also serves to show how our university supports not only academic but also athletic performance at the highest level.
