The 13th PhD-Student Workshop on Industrial and Public Economics (WIPE) was held on February 20-21, 2025, at the Universitat Rovira i Virgili in Reus, Spain. WIPE aims to create an academic platform for PhD students to connect with other young scientists, postdoctoral researchers, and more experienced researchers. The workshop provides a space for sharing experiences, research ideas, ongoing projects, and future research directions in the field of industrial organization and public economics. The program included approximately 20 presentations, each accompanied by a professional discussion led by workshop participants. The event also featured a lecture by Prof. Philip McCann from the Alliance Manchester Business School at the University of Manchester.

Our PhD candidate, Ing. Miriam Brellíková, participated in the workshop and won the award for the best paper on science, research, and innovation. Congratulations!

She presented a paper called “The Domestic Competitive Landscape and its Impact on Export Volumes: The Case of EU Beer Industry. This paper investigates the impact of domestic competition on beer export volumes within the European Union, with a particular focus on the fast growth of microbreweries. By employing an Augmented Gravity Model of Trade and analyzing data from 2017 to 2022, the study provides robust evidence that the strengthening of domestic competition, as captured by the ratio of microbreweries to total breweries, significantly enhances beer exports. The results reveal that countries with a more dynamic microbrewery sector tend to exhibit higher export volumes, supporting the hypothesis that intense domestic rivalry supports efficiency and international competitiveness. The findings emphasize the importance of fostering a competitive domestic environment for export growth, offering valuable insights for industry stakeholders and policymakers aiming to leverage the dynamics of the beer industry to support trade performance. This paper contributes to the broader debate on international trade and industrial organization by demonstrating how small-scale market entrants can influence macro-level export outcomes in a rapidly evolving sector.
